Telecon 23 December 2008
There was a peak of 15 participants on the Web Ex for this session. Discussions - not yet complete- Use Cases and Scenarios
- Consolidated list of Use Cases
- Discussion of consolidated list of use cases was led by Josh Lieberman and Nadine Alameh. The list will need to be polished and refined as we proceed. For example the Access WG may change use case #10 from "Access Services" to "Access Resources"
- Jeff DlB asked what the state of implementation of each of the use cases is. George P commented that AIP Phase 1 demonstrated the functionaliy of all the use cases, but they were not documented in Phase 1. AIP-2 is now documenting the use cases. It is anticipated that each of the use cases will again be implemted in AIP-2 and further that AIP-2 will identify persistent exemplar services for many of the use cases.
- Discussion that the list needs to be consolidated further in order to allow ease of use in the Scenarios by the Community WGs. For example, use cases 2, 3, and 4 could be combined into a single use case. Perhaps 7 and 8 can be combined. The variations would then be discussed in side of the single use case. The TT WGs need to look at their use cases to see how they can be consolidated. Do not renumber the use cases. For example if 7 and 8 are combined, use 7 for the combined use case and identify 8 as "number not used"
- Mapping between Scenarios and Use Cases
- The matrix mapping between the Scenarios and Use cases was discussed. Currently the matrix is empty. Several of the Community WGs commented they have already begun mapping their Scenario Events to Use Cases. And the Communtiy WGs anticipated then updating the Matrix.
- More columns may be needed as some Community WGs have more than one scenario.
- Action: Transverse Technology WGs to first complete versions of Use Cases by 16 January. This will include consolidating the Use Cases that the WG owns. Refining the titles and descriptions of the Use Cases in the consolidated list table. Posting a dcoumented version of the use cases to the WG Google site.
- Action: Community WGs to complete scenario events table including identification of use cases for each event.
- Action: George P. to review and update redundant page based upon progress on consolidated Use Cases
- Transverse Technology WG updates
- Workflow and Alerts

- Discsussion of metadata mappings icnluding SIO 19115, Coverages, FGDC, OGC CIM. Focus is on "Mandatory core plus contact"
- Considering a recommendation of a link between GetCapabilities and MD_Metadata. This may exist in OWS Common. It does not exist in WMS 1.3 which does not use OWS Common
- Considering a recommendation that GetCapabilities include link to registry that has a metadata record for the service.
- Access Services: products, sensors, models
- Update provided by Luis Bermudez
- WG is dicussing the Use Cases
- Discsussion of how "resource" in a GEOSS context can mean service, model, process.
- Need to focus on how the use cases will meet user needs, through linking with the Community Scenarios.

Telecon: 7 October 2008
Discussions
- AIP-2 Development
- Working Groups have been established. An invitation to lead a WG was sent to leaders of the Kickoff meeting sessions. Based on e-mails replies and discussions during this telecon, most of session leaders have agreed to lead the WGs. A list of the WG Leaders will be posted. Responsibilities of the WG Leaders are posted on the AIP Development page.
- Milestones and Schedule was reviewed. The table needs to be refined in order to reflect the discussion about wikis, engineering reports and best practices.
- Engineering Reports were discussed as being a document developed in the AIP that would then be offered for consideration by the GEOSS Best practice Wiki process. The Best Practice wiki allows for either posting the best practice content directly in the wiki or to describe the practice in the wiki and then to post a document that describes the practice. AIP will need to discuss and decide on the approaches. For example should the results of the AIP WGs be documented, e.g., pdf, and then posted to the GEOSS Best Practice Wiki or should the AIP-2 WG Wiki on Google Sites be used to create content directly in the GEOSS BP Wiki? George Percivall will contact Ruth Duerr, Point of Contact for the GEOSS BP Wiki on these topics.
- Wikis for collaboration: It was agreed that the WGs will use two web sites to manage their activities.
- WG page on OGC network will be a summary of the WG agreements, e.g., a dashboard. One use for this WG page will be to present to the AIP Plenary telecon. The WG leaders will be the editors of the OGC Network pages.
- WG pages on Google Sites will be used for the dynamic disucssion of the WG. Josh Lieberman will send a message to the AIP Plenary to gather names of those that will be editing the WG pages. Anyone invovled in the WG can request an account to edit the Google Sites WG pages.
- Both the OGC Network and the Google Sites pages will remain publically accessible. If there are problems we would consider limiting access.
- We need to investigate the methods to transition for the WG pages to the GEOSS Best Practice wiki.
- e-mail lists
- For the AIP Plenary list. All existing accounts on the aip plenary mailing list will be unchanged. George Percivall will send a message to the point of contact for each CFP response indicating how they can add persons from their organizations to the AIP Plenary list.
- WG lists. Two of the WG lists from last year will be reused: Portals and Clearinghouse. Other WG leaders can decide if they want OGC to create a new mailing list for their WG or if they want to use a seperate mail reflector.
- WG Telecons will be arranged by the WG leaders. On an occasional basis WG leaders can request use of the GEO webex by contacting Osamu Ochiai.
- SBA/CoP/Scenario WG updates
- Disaster Response - Stuart Frye provided an update on the Disaster Resonse session at the GEOSS in Americas workshop last week. Additional interest in the Caribbean Flood Scenario was identified at the workshop.
- Climate Change and Biodiversity - Doug Nebert provided a summary of discussion from the AIP-2 Kickoff Workshop, including discussion of the polar area of interest for this scenario.
- Renewable Energy - Lionel Menard provide an update on several activities from last week about getting Mines Paris activities underway and of conversation with Greg Yetman about CIESIN support of the SBA.
- Air Quality and Health - David McCabe provided an update on the AQ session at the GEOSS in Americas workshop last week including increasing interest in the pilot scenario. Erin Robinson reported the results of an ESIP AQ telecon from last Friday, including disucssions about wikis and telecons for the WG. The AIP-2 AQ WG anticipates weekly telecons at 11 am EST (US) on Mondays.

- Working Groups
- Working Groups are formed from the Kickoff Sessions. George Percivall will send a message to the Sessions Chairs invting them to be WG Leaders.
- Milestones
- Need for ability to integrate WG schedules into an overall schedule. This was discussed at the kickoff. Erin Robinson suggests that perhaps keeping WG schedules on Google Groups would enable integration of the schedules using Yahoo Pipes.
- Larry McGovern will provide an set of milestones for developing RM-ODP views as part of the development effort. These milestones will be need to be integrated with the development milestones.
- Communication mechanisms
- General agreement on the hybrid Drupal/Wiki approach to the collaborative workspace for the WGs. The Drupal base OGC Network would relatively stable compared with the Wiki-style based pages. Two options for wiki-style pages have been suggested: ESIP Federation is offering to host any WG workspace; Google Groups is also avaiable. Erin Robinson suggested that the OGC Network page contain an RSS feed from the wiki page. The RSS feed would indicate recent changes to the wiki page, thereby providing an automatic dynamic portion to the Drupal page. WG leaders would be responsible for the other content on the Drupal/OGC Network page. Any Participant could contribute to the wiki-page.
- Best Practices
- Suggestion is to use the GEOSS Best Practice as the method to document the artifacts of the AIP-2 development process. Discussion that Best Practices are typically an after the fact document rather than a design document. AIP-2 would need to define an Initial BP as the design document. Final BP's would be developed at the end of the process and made a deliverable to the process to GEO.

- Posting of Responses
- 32 responses are now posted. The VIEWS response was the most recent addition.
- Analysis of responses
- The topics discussed in the analysis will support development of the Kickoff agenda and the subsequent organization for work.
- Various edits were made to the Analysis summaries for missing contributions and topics.
- Discussion that Operational Exemplars is a desired outcome of AIP-2, while recognizing that some of the contributions are prototypes. This is to be anticipated as the development of GEOSS SOA cannot be done with the existing operational systems. So, AIP as a pilot points toward how operational systems can evolved to make the results of the pilot peristent. The GEOSS Registry allows for a service to indicate the level of operational status as an attribute for the registered service metadata.
- Discussion of how GEOSS Clearinghouse will interact with the Community Catalogues: distributed search and harvest are the two use cases. The various Clearinghouse candidates offer different capabilities for this interaction. The AIP-1 Impelmentation Report indicates that the Clearinghouse will need to support both distributed search and harvest. This is because in part due to the policies of the community catalogues.

Discussion
- Update on GEOSS Common Infrastructure
- Letters have been sent to GCI inviting contributions for GCI components: ESRI, Compusult, ESA, FAO, IEEE, GMU
- A group is being formed of 10 members to lead the GCI evaluation : 4 from ADC and 2 from each of the other committees.
- Telecon later in May of the group will develop Terms of Reference for the evaluation group.
- The evaluation will emphasis logistics and operations. The GCI evaluation will be separate from the AIP IOC Augmentation. GCI evaluation will focus on sustainable aspects. AIP is focus is on IOC augmentation and refinement of components in practice.
- The AIP CFP will follow the GCI in showing an interface between the GEO Portal and the GEOSS Component Registry.
- Review of CFP Outline and work plan for development
- 20080512 version of plan.doc
- Test Facility for Service Registration was discussed based upon results of the February workshop. It is anticiapted that it will be a distributed Test Facility with components contributed by multiple organizations. The facility may reuse components from the existing OGC Compliance Test facility. The GEOSS Test Facility will not be performing OGC compliance tests. OGC Compliance certification can only be achieved using the test facility hosted by OGC and its members. The GEOSS Test Facility purpose is to support registration of services in the GEOSS registry and to achieve interoperability in the operational GEOSS network. The GEOSS facility may also provide the status checking of operational services.
- Criteria for persistent, operational services were discussed. A version of the criteria will be presented at the ADC meeting next week.
- UIC/ADC Air Quality Scenario Workshop
- Question about geographic region: has the geographic region for the scenarios been chosen? Discussion was that the scenarios should be written so that they could be applied to any geographic location. Geographic areas of interest for the demonstrations will be initially discussed at the Kickoff Workshop.

2008 April 8 - Telecon
DATE: Tuesday, 8 April 2008 TIME: 14:00:00 UTCDiscussions
- Update on GEOSS Common Infrastructure:
- The GEOSS Common Infrastructure Process paper was presented to the GEO ExCom, March 26/27.
- The ExCom agreed that an Initial Operation Capability (IOC) should begin on about 1 May 2008. This will mark the beginning of GEOSS Operations Phase 1 (OP1). During OP1 an evaluation will be conducted on the Common Infrastructure IOC with an emphasis on GEO Portal. A task force (separate from AR-07-02) will be established for the evaluation. Letter agreements with the 3 GEO Portal Providers will be developed.
- The ExCom also discussed: a search interface to the Clearinghouse; open source or proprietary code as a criteria.
- Open discussion of the activities of the AIP to support OP1
- Ideas for the relationship of the AIP to the IOC were discussed. Initial thoughts are that the AIP would augment the IOC with additional services and architecture. During OP1 it is anticipated that the will be flexibility in the components that will allow further development, adaptation and refinement of the architecture developed for IOC. OP1 should be viewed as a phase in a long term process of development of all the components of the Common Infrastructure but also the other components and services of the architecture.
- During OP1 it will be necessary to continue development and refinement of the search capability across the community catalogues. This work will need to consider the differing vocabulary and metadata schemas implying the need for a broker functionality perhaps using the workflow services.
- The AIP Process will need to support convergence and consistency across the diversity of contributions from the many participants. Focusing on the Societal Benefit areas will aid this focus. Also the process of CFP, CFP responses and Kickoff workshop for OP1 will bring focus to common areas of development. Formation of Working groups for AIP/OP1 will be useful to aid this convergence.
- There was general support for an emphasis on "persistent exemplars" ; networks of services based on operational services linked together using the GEOSS ADC Architecture developed in 2007. Contributions by GEO Members with persistent services will be key to this.
- A plan for developing the Call for Participation was briefly discussed. The plan makes use of the CFP from 2007. G. Percivall is enlisting contributions to the CFP development, e.g., scenarios from the architecture workshop. The CFP will remain open for the entirity of OP1, while urging responses to the CPF in time for planning the Kickoff Workshop. Developing an Open Call for Participation in AIP-2008

- Questions and comments raised in the telecon discussion:
- How can comments by the Task team be submitted?
- How might ESRI and Compusult participate independent of a member or a participating organization.
- OGC's role is as point of contact for GEO Task AR-07-02.
- GEO Secretariat is conducting the establishment process.
- The Establishment process and Task AR-07-02 are GEO activities.
- AIP Scenarios and process
- During ADC-6 there was an emphasis requested that the AIP focus on operational or nearly -operational deployments of solutions, designed by those with the problem being solved.
- The role of AIP is to work with members, participating organizations and other GEO tasks to enhance the operational systems use of the GEOSS architecture.
- The workshop scenarios identified jointly by UIC and ADC will be refined to meet this objective.
- Emphasis needs to be made that the AIP process is open; there has been a perception that no participants could join after the CFP last year - this was an incorrect perception.
